Although frac tanks were originally created for use in the hydraulic fracturing or fracking industry, they have become increasingly popular for use in other industries. Perhaps this is due to the fact that frac tanks provide a significant amount of storage capacity, are portable, and readily available. In addition, they can be hauled in and out of virtually any terrain. Remember, they were originally designed to handle the rough and rugged conditions of the gas and oil fields. Although frac tanks have a plethora of industrial based storage uses, they should never be utilized to store sewage related waste.

This is due to the fact that frac tanks are considered to be tanks instead of containers. That being stated, far too many operations utilize them for the temporary storage and removal of sewage waste because they seem to be the ideal vessel for this type of substance. For example, frac tanks are typically lined with sturdy materials, and are often outfitted with relief systems as well as level gauges and alarm systems. The good news is that there are many other uses for frac tanks that are in compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Diesel Storage

Frac tanks are a great way to store diesel fuel, which means you can take advantage of the low fuel prices in order to save money by accepting whole truckloads at once. For example, you can save upwards of 20-30 cents per gallon of diesel by accepting a full transport, or 7,000-gallon load instead of a standard 1,000 to 4,000 gallon delivery. Saving 20-30 cents per gallon at 7,000 gallons equals a savings of $1,400 to $2,100. That can certainly add up quickly.

Liquid Fertilizer Storage

Purchasing liquid fertilizer in bulk can certainly save farmers a tremendous amount of money over the course of a year. Frac tanks are the perfect vessels to store the extra fertilizer until it is needed. For example, if you are paying $300 per ton of liquid nitrogen, and can reduce that down to $250 per ton by accepting a full tanker truckload, the savings will make a tremendous impact on your bottom line.

Manure Storage

Hog farmers in particular can benefit from the use of frac tanks in their manure application. In essence, frac tanks enable the use of field tankers, dragline or drag hose, and can be moved in mere minutes. This not only speeds up the process, but has other positive implications as well. For example, a local farmer wanted to avoid hauling in the manure into the fields due to the time and expense. In addition, he was getting complaints from his neighbors due to the smell. So he decided to utilize a frac tank with a hose to pump the manure to the fields that were located within 1.5 miles from the source. Problems solved.

Water Treatment

There are a great deal if industries and municipalities that need to treat water before it is either released into the environment or released into the sewer system. Factories can store that water in a frac tank and then add the necessary chemicals need to treat it. Frac tanks are also incredibly useful for oil-based applications. For example, while the water is stored in the frac tank, it will allow the residual oils to rise to the top of the tank. The treated water can them be pumped out near the bottom of the tank.

No matter what you use your frac tank or frac tanks for, they must be inspected, maintained, and cleaned on a regular basis in order to ensure that they will remain in operation without the threat of leaks.
