Catch Basin Cleaning May Be Your Responsibility

Did you know that catch basin cleaning may be your responsibility? If you own commercial, industrial, or residential property that has a catch basin on the grounds then you are responsible for it. That means you need to have a professional catch basin cleaning company service it at least two (2) times per year. Typically, you should have your catch basin cleaned and inspected in the early fall and in the early spring. So, what can happen if you don’t take part in our catch basin cleaning services on a regular basis?

First and foremost, you need to know exactly what a catch basin is and how it works. In essence, a catch basin distributes rainwater and snowmelt runoff in order to prevent it from flooding your property and the surrounding areas around your property including your neighbors property, and city or town property including the streets. The rainwater and snowmelt runoff flows until it reaches a low point in the ground and the street. That’s where catch basins are located. In essence, they are a box that’s buried underground.

There’s a grate at the top of the box located at ground level. The rainwater and snowmelt runoff enter into the box through the grate. Any debris that the rainwater and snowmelt runoff picks up along the way, including garbage, sticks, branches, leaves, sand, dirt, and other debris, sinks to the bottom of the box. The water rises to the top of the box. The water then leaves the catch basin through a pipe. The water is distributed to either the city or town’s sewage treatment plant, or to a local body of water such as a pond, lake, or stream.

The water can also be distributed to a man-made retention pond that’s located near or even on your property. Now that you know what happens to the water, can you take a guess what happens to the debris that sinks to the bottom of the catch basin? It stays there until you hire a professional catch basin cleaning company. If you let the debris stay in the catch basin too long it builds up to the point that it blocks the water distribution pipe. That means the stormwater has nowhere to go. So, the water ends up backing up out of the catch basin.

At that point it can flood your property, and anything surrounding your property. If that happens, you are responsible to pay for any of the damages that the flood causes.
