The rainwater and snowmelt runoff flows until it reaches a low point in the ground and the street. That’s where catch basins are located. In essence, they are a box that’s buried underground.
There’s a grate at the top of the box located at ground level. The rainwater and snowmelt runoff enter into the box through the grate. Any debris that the rainwater and snowmelt runoff picks up along the way, including garbage, sticks, branches, leaves, sand, dirt, and other debris, sinks to the bottom of the box. The water rises to the top of the box. The water then leaves the catch basin through a pipe. The water is distributed to either the city or town’s sewage treatment plant, or to a local body of water such as a pond, lake, or stream.
The water can also be distributed to a man-made retention pond that’s located near or even on your property. Now that you know what happens to the water, can you take a guess what happens to the debris that sinks to the bottom of the catch basin? It stays there until you hire a professional catch basin cleaning company. If you let the debris stay in the catch basin too long it builds up to the point that it blocks the water distribution pipe. That means the stormwater has nowhere to go. So, the water ends up backing up out of the catch basin.
At that point it can flood your property, and anything surrounding your property. If that happens, you are responsible to pay for any of the damages that the flood causes.
