When you flush the toilet you certainly don’t give it much thought. You just expect it to work. The same holds true when you wash your hands after. You expect the water to come out of the faucet and then drain down the drain. However, that is not always the case. Sometimes the toilet doesn’t flush properly. So you hit the panic button and then try to plunge it if you happen to have a plunger handy. If you can’t plunge it your next move is to call a plumber or maintenance person to your property to fix it. If you own or manage a building and your tenant’s toilet doesn’t flush properly, the very first thing they do as call you or your representative.

At that point you can go and attempt to plunge the toilet yourself, or hire a maintenance person or plumber to do the work. Case closed. Except the case is not closed if you have a clogged sewer line. In essence, the toilet will clog again rather soon. When the clogged sewer line gets worse, you’ll begin to have issue with the sinks. The water may run fine, but it will start to drain slowly. At some point in the near future the water will not drain out of the sinks at all. The same holds true for the shower and or tub. The water will start to drain slowly. Soon it won’t drain at all.

That can be more than an annoying inconvenience. It’s actually a health hazard. This is due to the fact that if you have a clogged sewer line your entire sewer system is literally and figuratively a ticking time bomb. If that statement sounds a bit dramatic or even extreme, it’s anything but dramatic or extreme. The bottom line is a clogged sewer line can easily lead to raw sewage and waste water backing up through the pipe and entering into the property through the toilets, sinks, and showers/tubs. You may have seen pictures of this occurrence on the Internet.

Perhaps you watched a television show, or it happened to a friend of yours. The thing is when raw sewage and wastewater backs up into your property it’s an even bigger nightmare than you can possibly imagine. The raw sewage and wastewater will literally explode out of the toilets, sink drains, and shower/tub drains and cover everything in its path. It will cover the floors, walls, and ceilings in the bathrooms. The good news is that this can be easily prevented.
