A great deal of property owners across New England is actually responsible for catch basin cleaning but may be unaware of it. Here’s the bottom line. If there are any catch basins located directly on your property, not on the street, but on your property than you are responsible for it. That means you need to schedule a catch basin cleaning service on a regular basis. FYI, by regular basis we are actually talking about twice per year in the minimum. The best times of year for catch basin cleaning are in the late fall and early spring. That is due to the fact the leaves, downed branches, and other tree related debris could easily clog your catch basins.

So, what happens if your catch basins become clogged? Well, let’s just say it’s not good. When water starts flowing due to rainstorms and melting snow it will flow over the ground until it reaches the catch basins in the area. If the catch basins are working properly all of the sediment in the water will sink down to the bottom of the catch basins. The water will then enter into a pipe in the catch basin so that it can be redistributed to a waste processing facility. The water can also be distributed to a local waterway or even a manmade retention pond in the area. However, if the catch basin is clogged up the water cannot enter into it.

Instead, the water will seek out a low point and start to flood that low point. Eventually the flood will spread. In fact, clogged catch basins have been responsible for flooding entire streets and whole areas in New England. The good news is that can be easily avoided. So, exactly is catch basin cleaning? The bottom line is that catch basin cleaning is the removal of all of the sediment that collects at the bottom of catch basins. If the sediment is not removed in a timely manner it will block up the pipe within the catch basin that the water is distributed through.

Floods that are caused by catch basin clogs are the responsibility of the property owner. That means you are on the line for the damages to your property. Typically speaking, property insurance will not cover flood damages. You are also on the line for any damages that your neighbors suffer. Once again, chances are high that your insurance policy will not cover that either. Last, but certainly not least, you are on the line for any damages that happen to the municipality. For example, a flood may very well ruin the pavement in the streets. Can you afford to pay for all of that out of pocket?
