Catch Basin Maintenance Saves You From a World of Trouble

Did you know that catch basin maintenance can save you from a world of trouble? If you have a catch basin on your commercial, industrial, or even residential property then you are 100% responsible for making sure that it’s maintained properly. However, there are many property owners who completely overlook this important task. Catch basin maintenance can be one of those things that people just don’t give much thought to unless disaster strikes. So, what exactly is a catch basin and what does it do? In essence, a catch basin is a box that is buried under the ground. There is a grate on the top of the catch basin that is located at ground level.

Storm water from rainstorms and snow melt enters into the catch basin through the grate. Before the storm water enters into the grate, it picks up a bunch of sediment as it travels over the ground. When the storm water enters into the catch basin, the sediment sinks to the bottom of the box, and the water rises to the top section of the box. The water exits the box through a pipe and is distributed to a local body of water, or a man made retention pond. Depending on your city or town, the storm water may enter directly to the public sewer system where it will end up at a sewage treatment facility.

At this point you may be curious as to what happens with all of that sediment that sinks to the bottom of the catch basin. That’s exactly where the problems happen if it’s not taken care of properly. The sediment will stay in the box and keep collecting if it’s not removed. It doesn’t take long for the sediment to gather to the point that it ends up blocking the water distribution pipe. When that happens, the storm water that enters into the catch basin has nowhere to go. So, it exits back out of the catch basin through the grate.

That can easily cause a flood. If a catch basin that’s located on your property causes a flood, you are responsible for any damages that flood causes from both a legal and financial standpoint. The good news is that catch basin maintenance is a cost effective way to avoid all of that from happening.
