Do you know what catch basin cleaning is important? Most real estate owners who have a catch basin on their property don’t give this incredibly important device much if any thought. They just assume that it will work correctly. The problem with that line of thinking is that catch basins need to be serviced on a regular basis. It should be on your list of property maintenance tasks. The bottom line is that catch basin cleaning goes a long way in preventing floods from occurring. Here’s why. Catch basins play a critical role in water management in your municipality. Whenever it rains or large amounts of snow melt all at once water runoff forms.
Some of the water runoff will absorb into the ground, but most of it flows over the ground. The water continues to flow until it reaches the catch basins that are installed in various spots in your neighborhood. In essence, catch basins are water collection and distribution boxes that are buried underground. They have a grate at the top that’s flush with the surface of the ground. When the water runoff reaches a catch basin it enters the box through the grate. The sediment that collects in the water sinks to the bottom of the collection box. The sediment includes sand, dirt, sticks, stones, leaves, trash, and other elements.
Once the sediment separates from the water, the water enters into a distribution pipe. The water then flows to a local body of water such as a stream, pond, or lake. If a local body of water isn’t located close enough to the catch basin, the water is distributed to either a man-made retention pond or the main sewer line where it will end up at a sewage treatment facility. So, what happens to the sediment that settles to the bottom of the catch basis? It stays there until catch basin cleaning occurs.
If you fail to have your catch basin cleaned on a regular basis, the sediment will build up to the point that it fills the catch basin and blocks the water distribution pipe. That means the water runoff has nowhere to go. Guess what happens next? The water runoff may very well flood your property, your neighbors properties, and even flood into the street. Flood water tends to ruin just about everything in its path. The good news is that flooding can be easily avoided as long as you hire a professional catch basin cleaning company to maintain your catch basin.
