Hydro excavation is a technologically advanced process of excavating the ground. It utilizes a highly pressurized water source and a commercial vacuum truck. In essence, the water is sprayed at the ground. The water is so powerful that it breaks up the soil and turns it into sludge. The sludge is removed with the commercial vacuum system. The sludge is stored in the tank of the commercial vacuum truck until it can be properly disposed of. Did you notice that we didn’t mention any heavy-duty trucks in the hydro excavation description?
That’s because the process doesn’t use them. It’s incredibly expensive to operate bulldozers, backhoes, and dump trucks. The price of fuel is climbing higher every day. The labor to operate them is also quite high. At the end of the day, the project owner or developer is the one that’s paying for these high costs. The traditional excavation method of digging also takes significantly more time to complete. It can take weeks or even longer to excavate a job site. However, with hydro excavation the same job site can be excavated within days.
Hydro excavation provides you with the ability to have the foundation installed multiple weeks ahead of time. The hydro excavation method removes soil a lot faster than the traditional excavation process. It also eliminates the need to backfill once the foundation is poured. That’s because hydro excavation is laser like in its precision, and doesn’t remove more soil than necessary. That’s why it can be utilized for other applications such as trenching the ground for utility line installation and or repair.
Hydro excavation can also be used in hard-to-reach areas where large excavation trucks simply do not fit. Here’s why. The equipment consists of a commercial vacuum truck that can be parked fairly far away from the work area. The water is sprayed through a hose that can reach upwards of thirty feet or longer. The sludge is vacuumed up through another hose that can reach upwards of thirty feet or longer. Often times, the vacuum truck is parked on the street. Hydro excavation is incredibly effective during the winter months when the ground is frozen.
That’s because the highly pressurized water can actually be heated, which makes it far easier to break up the frozen ground. Not only does hydro excavation save you time and money, it’s also better for the environment. This is due to the fact that it doesn’t burn nearly as much fuel as the traditional excavation process. In addition, when bulldozers, backhoes, and dump trucks are on a jobsite they tend to leak oil and other chemicals into the ground.
