Why Don’t More Companies Utilize Hydro Excavation

Why don’t more contractors, developers, and property owners utilize the hydro excavation method? First and foremost, the construction industry is notorious for being slow adopters of technology, and hydro excavation is a high-tech way to excavate dirt. Another reason is due to the fact that many people simply don’t know what hydro excavation is, or how it works. We fully understand that it’s difficult to utilize a construction method that you know nothing about. So, we’ll start with the basics.

Hydro excavation is by far the fastest and most cost effective way to excavate. The process does not rely on digging with shovels by hand, or on large digging trucks and equipment. Instead, hydro excavation uses a combination of highly pressurized water, and a commercial vacuum system. In essence, the highly pressurized water is sprayed at the area of the ground that requires excavation. The water immediately turns the dirt into sludge. The sludge is quickly removed with the commercial vacuum system.

The commercial vacuum system is typically in the form of a commercial vacuum truck. The highly pressurized water can be sprayed with such accuracy that there is little to zero need to backfill once the structure is installed in the hole. It’s basically laser precise.  For example, if you use hydro excavation to excavate the foundation for a home or building, the hole will be so precise that once the foundation is poured, you won’t need to backfill it. Of course, that saves a significant amount of time and money.

The sludge that’s vacuumed up can be temporarily stored inside the tank of the commercial vacuum truck until it’s discarded properly by the hydro excavation contractor. Speaking of the commercial vacuum truck, it can be parked as far away as the hose is long. For example, if the hydro excavation contractor uses a 35 foot vacuum hose, the commercial vacuum truck can be parked 35 feet away or less from the area that’s being excavated.

That means, hydro excavation is perfect for excavating in tight areas where large pieces of equipment, such as backhoes, bulldozers and dump trucks, cannot fit. The hydro excavation machinery is also significantly less expensive to operate when compared to those backhoes, bulldozers, and dump trucks. The bottom line is that hydro excavation equipment uses far less fuel, and can be operated by one or two workers.
