Basics of Maintaining a Septic Tank and Leach Field

If you have a septic tank and leach field at your commercial, industrial or residential property then it’s crucial that you have an understanding of how the system works in order to maintain it properly. Failure to maintain your septic tank and leach field will result in clogs in the system that will lead to leaks. First and foremost, a septic system is basically a large tank that’s buried underground, and a leach field that is connected by sewer pipes. The pipes are connected to the building’s main sewer line, which runs through the tank and out to the leach field.

Your septic tank typically lasts for 20-40 years if it’s properly maintained. However, the leach field can last upwards of 50 years when properly maintained. It’s expensive to replace your septic tank and or leach field, so maintaining the system is well worth your efforts. The question that you may be asking yourself at this point is what do you need to do in order to maintain your septic system. It starts with having the tank pumped on a regular basis. That means you should have your septic tank pumped by a professional company once every 2-3 years on average.

However, if there are a lot of people working at or living at your property, you should have the septic tank pumped either every year or every other year. It’s certainly not worth pushing the envelope on something so important. You should also have your septic system inspected for leaks when the tank is being pumped. The technician will insert a video camera into the tank to make sure all of the parts are working correctly. The video camera inspection will also detect any leaks that are happening within your septic system.

You should also keep an eye out for leaks yourself. It’s fairly simple. Walk around your property. If you notice any unusual puddles forming and it hasn’t rained in a while, chances are high that your septic system is leaking. You will most likely notice that those puddles have a nasty odor to them as well. At that point, it’s time to call in a professional. If you haven’t had your septic tank pumped in a while it could be as simple as that. However, something more serious could be causing the leaks. Either way, you need to have it taken care of ASAP.
