If you or your tenants are having issues with the plumbing system, it may be due to a clogged sewer line. Some tell-tale signs are gurgling sounds coming from the toilet, foul odors coming from the drains, and multiple drains that are running slow due to low water pressure. In a worst-case scenario, raw sewage will back up through the toilets, sink drains, and shower/tub drains. So, what should you do if the sewer is clogged at your building? First and foremost, you need to release the pressure in the system by shutting off the main supply of water.

The next step is to take a walk around the grounds until you find the sewer cleanout line. It’s typically a short white pipe that has a cap on the top. You need to release the pressure by slowly unscrewing the cap. Your next step is to contact us immediately so that we can evaluate and fix the problem ASAP. Clogged sewer lines are an inconvenience, but they can turn into an incredibly unpleasant situation if not taken care of quickly. The drain in every plumbing fixture connects to the main sewer line. If the main sewer line is clogged it will back up the various drains in your property.

In essence, raw sewage and wastewater is trying to exit the property, but cannot since the line is blocked. The raw sewage and wastewater have nowhere to go at this point. Instead of exiting your property it forces its way back up the drain lines that are attached to the plumbing fixtures. When that happens the raw sewage and waste water flow out of the plumbing fixtures and enter into the property. If that happens, the interior of your property will be flooded with raw sewage and wastewater.

The good news is that this can be avoided if you contact us and release the pressure in the system as soon as you or anyone in the building notices the signs that the sewer line is clogged. So, what usually causes clogged sewer lines? In most cases, trees are at the root of the problem both literally and figuratively. The tree roots seek water and food sources in the ground. Raw sewage and wastewater provide both. So, the tree roots invade into the main sewer line through tiny cracks in the pipe. At that point, the tree roots grow quickly because they are being watered and fed.

As the tree roots grow, they block the pipe. Eventually it becomes difficult and then impossible for raw sewage and wastewater to pass through the sewer pipes. Sewer lines also become clogged when people flush items down the toilet that they’re not supposed too. For example, you’re not supposed to flush female hygiene products down the toilet. Throw them in the trash instead.
