If you own a residential property than you should pay careful attention to your Massachusetts residential driveway drainage systems. In essence, you are counting on them to work whenever there are heavy rainstorms, and or the snow melts all at once during the warmer spring weather. However, this is a topic that is often overlooked unless there is a problem. Drainage all too often, falls into the “out of sight and out of mind” category, for the vast majority of home owners. That being stated, if your Massachusetts residential driveway drainage systems are not working properly, it can cause a plethora of issues now and in the future.

If there is a problem with your drainage, you will begin to notice some of these problems right away. This is the time to take action. For example, when water is not draining off of your driveway it tends to puddle in the low spots. The puddles may even remain for days or even weeks after the rainstorm or snowmelt has passed. These puddles of water can cause quite a bit of obvious damage such as discoloration of the concrete or asphalt as well as causing cracks and heaves in the surface.

If left untreated, standing puddles of water will begin to seep down through the concrete or asphalt, instead of washing out, and will also destabilize the base materials that are under the concrete or asphalt. Once that occurs, the soil will begin to lose its load bearing capacity. Over time, this will cause the driveway to crack. If that happens, you will need to completely replace your driveway, which is an expensive endeavor. Once the base of your driveway is compromised by the standing water, it may very well negatively affect the surrounding areas of unpaved surfaces in your yard.

For example, your lawn may be in a constant state of sogginess, which is certainly not good for the grass. The soil in the surrounding areas of your driveway may also wash away, which can damage or even destroy the bushes, flowers, plants, and trees in your yard. In a worst-case scenario, the water will damage your home’s foundation. If the water makes its way to the foundation of the house and destroys the soil underneath the foundation, you may be facing an incredibly difficult and costly repair process.
