Did you know that catch basin cleaning helps save the environment? Most people do not know this important fact. Actually, most people do not give catch basins much if any thought unless they happen to drop something down the catch basin grate. Here’s another interesting fact about catch basin cleaning. If the catch basins on the street or on your property are not cleaned and maintained properly they can cause a great deal of flooding, which in turn can cause a great deal of damage. So what are catch basins and how do they work?

In essence, a catch basin is a box that is buried underground for the purpose of distributing excessive amounts of water from rainstorms and snowmelt runoff. At the top of the catch basin is a grate that is located at street or ground level. The grate allows the excessive amount of water from rainstorms and snowmelt runoff to enter into the catch basin. Once the stormwater and or snowmelt runoff enters into the catch basis a few things happen. First and foremost, any trash, debris, and heavy-duty particles that are contained in the water sink to the bottom of the catch basin.

At this point the water is purified to a certain degree. By purified we are not talking about water that is drinkable. We are talking about water that can now be distributed to local water sources such as streams, ponds, lakes, and rivers. Since the catch basin basically separates all of the items that are harmful for the environment out of the water, the stormwater and snowmelt runoff becomes safe for the environment, Once the unwanted materials sinks to the bottom of the catch basin, the cleaner water exits the catch basin through a distribution pipe.

From the distribution pipe the water travels to the local waterways for final distribution. If the catch basin is located too far from a local waterway, the cleaned stormwater and or snowmelt runoff will go from the distribution pipe to either a local manmade retention pond that is located near the catch basin, or the water enters into the main sewage line where it then travels to a sewage treatment facility. Now that you know what happens to the stormwater and snowmelt runoff, it’s time talk about what happens to the trash, debris, and heavy-duty particles that sink to the bottom of the catch basin. This is where the catch basin cleaning comes into play.

The bottom line is that all of that junk needs to be cleaned out of the catch basin unit by a professional environmental company. If the catch basins are not cleaned on a regular basis the trash, debris, and heavy-duty particles will build up to the point that they block the distribution pipe. That is when flooding occurs because the stormwater and snowmelt runoff overflows out of the catch basin and enters into the street or your grounds. If that dirty water enters into the local waterways it will pollute them, which is why we say that catch basin cleaning helps save the environment.
